Economy:
In Americas, Haiti has stayed the least-developed country. Since 1980s,
Haiti has been falling behind other countries
that are being developed. In the U.N human development index in 2006, Haiti
was ranked 146th out of 177 counties. In 2003, it was estimated that 80% of the population was poor.
Now, Haiti is the only country in America on the U.N’s list of least Developed Countries. In the years of 2001
and 2002, the economic growth was negative and it 2003, it was just flat.
Almost 66% of all
Haitians work in agriculture, wish is mostly small farming. Only 305 make up the GDP. Over the pass years, not a lot of jobs
were created but the informal economy has been growing. Two of the Haitians most important exports are mangoes and coffee.
On the corruption perceptions index, Haiti
has been grade among the most corrupt countries in the world. The national government’s budget is made up about 30-40%
of foreign aid. The United States, Canada
and the European Union have been Haiti’s
largest donors. They have contributed a lot. Some other countries that make many contribution of Haiti’s
economy are Cuba and Venezuela.
In
2001-2004, the U.S aid to the government has completed. This happened after President Aristide was accused of many crimes.
After Aristide got exile in 2004, they had restored aid with Haiti.
Also, the U.N Stabilization mission in Haiti
was led by the Brazilian army during the peacekeeping operation.
