Haiti is collated on the western part
of Hispaniola. Hispaniola is considered as the largest island of the Greater Antilles. Besides Cuba and the Dominican Republic,
Haiti is considered as the third largest country in the Caribbean. Haiti is situated only 80 km from Cuba. The land of Haiti
is mostly consisted of rugged mountains mixed with small coastal plain and river valleys.
The northern part of Haiti
is made up of the Massif Du Nord (Northern Massif) and Plaine du Nord (northern Plain). An extension of the Cordillera Central,
Dominican Republic, is the Massif du Nord. It starts at Haiti’s eastern border which is north of the Guayamouc River
and also it extends to the northwest by the northern peninsula. The Plaine du Nord is in the northern boarder with the Dominican
Republic connecting the Massif du Nord and the north part of the Atlantic Ocean.
The central region of Haiti is consisted
of two plans and two sets of mountains ranges. The plateau central (central plateau) extends near by both the Guayamouc River
and the Massif du Nord. It goes from the southeast to the northwest. The montagne Noire lies in the southwest of the plateau
central. it also merges mostly in the northeast by the massif du Nord.
Now, in the southern region, you will find
the Plaine du Cli-de-Sac and the mountainous southern peninsula. This plain is a natural despair that harbors the country’s
saline lake for example Trou Caiman and Lac Azuei, the largest lake of Haiti. Chaine de la Selle is a mountain that is an
extension of Sierra Da Boarcuo which is located in the Dominican Republic. This mountain also extends in the east by the Massif
de la Selle and in the west by the Massif de la Hotte and it harbors Pic La Selle. Pic la Sellle is the highest point in Haiti
and it is 8,793 ft.
Plaine de Lartibonite is the country most important valley for crops and it is located south of
Montagnes Noires. The countries largest river, River the l’Artibonite, is located in that region. It begins in the
western region of the Dominican Republic and then it continues to central Haiti and it empties into the Golfe de la Gonave.
The largest elevated plateau is located in the western and central region of the island. Haiti is also made of islands that
are offshore. La Tortuga (Ile de la Tortue) a historically famous island that is located in the northern coast of Haiti. Then
there is La Gonace that is located in the Golfe de la Gonave. La Gonave is populated with rural villagers. Then there is Island
of Cows (Ile d Vache) is located in the tip of the southern part of Haiti. This island is made up of many beautiful sights
and two other island are the Ile Nanacaona and Cayemites.
