In 1925, about 60%
of Haiti was Green. The land and mountainous regions were covered of forest. Now,
since the population has cut down the trees only 2% of the 60% areas still forest. Deforestation has destroyed the fertile
farmlands. In the mountains areas, erosion has been severing. Most of the trees have been cut down to produce charcoal and
also it has become Haiti’s major
soured of fuel. What is happening to the forest of Haiti has attracted many international attentions. Also, it had caused many reforestation
efforts by has not been a great success.
Even
thought Haiti has some environmental problem,
it has a big quantity of biodiversity in proportion to its size. Haiti
has been the home of more than 6,000 plants and 35% of them are found endemic. Haiti
has not been only the home of plants but also the home of about 220 species of birds and 21 of them are common. The country
has all these different biodiversities because of mountainous lands and the elevation. Each elevation have different microclimates
and there own plants and animals. The scenery of Haiti
varies from green cloud forests, arid desert, palm tree, mountain peaks, and mangrove.
Environmental Issues:
Haiti
is facing environmental issues because of deforestation. The cutting down of trees has caused solid erosion. Now because of
the solid erosion, there has been some periodic flooding. On September 17, 2004, Jeanne, a tropical storm, had passed on the
north part of Haiti and it killed about
3,008 people. There were more damages in a city called Gonaives.
Before the incident of September happened, in May 2004 there were 3,000 citizens that died in the southern border of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
To solve the problem of deforestation because people are cutting down trees to make charcoal, they are working on a biofuel
solution.
